Mobility Disabilities

The grounds and walking paths at Asilomar are hilly making it difficult to navigate for people using manual wheelchairs or for someone who has difficulty walking. Asilomar's jitney (a 24-hour on-grounds shuttle service) is available to transport individuals and luggage anywhere within the property. There is 1 van with ramp available upon request. For 24-hour service dial "0" from any house phone for the Front Desk or from a cell phone dial (831) 372-8016. The boardwalk to Sunset Avenue is wheelchair accessible. Directly across Sunset Avenue is a short boardwalk that leads to a viewing platform. There are no accessible paths onto the beach.

Accessible Parking

There are designated accessible parking spaces located throughout Asilomar; all are clearly indicated on the property map. In addition to the designated accessible parking spaces on grounds, any of our marked loading/unloading zones can be utilized for overnight parking by a guest displaying a state issued permanent or temporary placard / license plate.

Our security department can also issue a temporary courtesy-parking pass for guests who do not have a state issued permanent or temporary placard / license plate. The courtesy-parking pass will permit parking in designated spaces and spaces designated as loading/unloading zones. This pass will not permit parking in a space designated for disabled.

Accessible Lodging

Completely remodeled fully accessible guest rooms include rooms 603 and 604 in surf & Sand, rooms 717, 718, 719, and 720 in Sea Galaxy and rooms 1114 and 1115 in East Woods. At this time, although not fully accessible, rooms 401 and 413 in Stuck-up Inn are the most wheelchair accessible guest rooms. Additional lodging that might be appropriate for someone that is semi-ambulatory is in South Long views, Afterglow, Embers, and Hearth.

The toilet area in these rooms has limited transfer space. For specific access features, information and availability contact the Asilomar Front Desk by dialing "0" from any house phone or dial (831) 372-8016 from your cell phone. Additional equipment available through Housekeeping includes:

  • One plastic shower bench with back that straddles the tub
  • One plastic stool with back that sits in side the tub
  • One toilet seat extension with attached grab bars
  • Board to place under the mattress to make it firmer
  • Asilomar Conference GroundsSM 107 acres of dunes, beach, and forest are dedicated to a natural ecological environment, and as such they are considered a bit rugged by some guests, particularly those who are elderly, infirmed, or physically disabled. The paved pathways have some slopes, steps, and uneven surfaces. There are some two-story buildings, and some guestrooms and meeting rooms have entry steps. In addition, all of the buildings were constructed between 1913 and 1982, and as a result, the majority of the rooms are not accessible to travelers with disabilities.

However, there are a limited number of disabled accessible features in some rooms including: bars in bathroom area, roll-in showers, buildings with elevators, and wide entry doors. TDD devices for the hearing impaired are available at the Front Desk upon request, trained guide, service dogs are allowed on the grounds, and there is disabled parking available. California State Parks does not discriminate against individuals with disabilities. Prior to arrival, visitors with special access needs should contact the Front Desk Manager on duty at (831) 372-8016.
